SBMO
Purpose of The SBMO
Founded in 1982, the Brazilian Microwave and Optoelectronics Society, SBMO, is a Scientific Society that congregates institutions, professionals and students from all parts of Brazil, and is dedicated to the development of technical and scientific activities in the areas of Microwave and Optoelectronics technology. The purposes of the SBMO are:
- to organize courses, seminars, meetings and conferences that promote the discussion of technical work on its fields of interest;
- the publication and circulation of technical papers and newsletters;
- the inter-relation with other professional and scientific societies with common interest in the application and development of microwave and optoelectronics technology;
- to collaborate with public and government bodies in matters that involve its fields of expertise;
- to stimulate educational activities in any topics related to these fields.
Organization of The SBMO
SBMO is formed by its General Assembly, composed by all members; the Executive Directorate, the Council and Fiscal Boards.
Members are admitted in the following categories: Senior, Student, Supporter, Collective and Honorary. At present, SBMO counts circa 300 Senior, 4 Supporter and 20 student members.
The Executive Directorate is constituted by the President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Deputy Treasurer, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, and Newsletter and WWW Editor. The Council Board is constituted by six Senior members, plus six deputies. The Fiscal Board is constituted by three Senior members, plus three deputies.
SBMO and Other Scientific Societies
The SBMO receives support and works in collaboration with various local and international Institutions and Societies, such as:
IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, USA); IEE (The Institute of Electrical Engineers, UK); URSI (International Union of Radio Science); The British Council, UK; SBrT (Telecommunication Brazilian Society); SBPC (Brazilian Society for the Development of Science); SET (Brazilian Society of Television Engineering); SBMag (Brazilian Electromagnetics Society); and SBMicro (Brazilian Microelectronics Society).
In the organization of its technical and professional events, the SBMO has received financial and structural assistance from several government and educational bodies, as well as private companies: CNPq, FAPESP, CAPES, FINEP, EPUSP, IMT, EE-MAUÁ, CETUC, UNICAMP, ITA, UFPA, UNB, EESC-USP, UFRN, CPqD, INPE, Agilent, CETM, Mackenzie, Marconi, Anacon, NEC, Autel, etc.
SBMO: Technical Activities
The National and International Conferences highlight the activities of SBMO. National Conferences have been organized biannually, since 1984, providing a fruitful forum for presentation and discussion of technical and professional issues that affect the microwave and optoelectronics community in the country.
Many University groups spread around Brazil have been responsible for organizing these events. The International Conferences take place in alternate years, and are worldwide recognized amongst the most important events in the areas of Microwaves and Optoelectronics, receiving the support of the IEEE, through MTT-S, AP-S and LEOS Societies. The programs of these Conferences include the presentation of Technical, Tutorial and Pannel sessions, as well as Workshops and Short Courses. It has also been usual the organization of Industrial Exhibitions taking place in parallel with the main Conference.
The main topics covered and discussed at these Conferences are: Medical and Industrial Applications, Microwave and Optical Materials, Microwave and Millimeter Wave Integrated Circuits, Monolithic Integrated Circuits, Optical and SAW Devices and Techniques, Active and Passive Devices and Components, Microwave/Optical Integration, Packaging Techniques, Computer-Aided-Design and Modelling, Microwave and Optical Measurements, Microwave Techniques in Radar and ECM, Microwave and Optical Education, Field Theory and Guided Waves, Numerical Methods in Electromagnetics, Antennas and Arrays, Scattering and Diffraction, Radio Propagation and Remote Sensing, Radio and Radar Meteorology, Wireless and Mobile Communications, Digital Radio Systems, Optical and Satellite Communications, etc.
SBMO has also promoted regional workshops for the discussion of specific subjects, such as Automated Measurements and Software for Microwaves and Optoelectronics.
SBMO Publications
All Conferences, Meetings and Courses organized by SBMO generate the publication of Proceedings and Booklets, that document all the technical work that has been presented. Some material regarding past Conferences are still available at the Secretary. The Society also distributes educational video tapes and demonstration softwares, and a Newsletter is edited every year. SBMO also compiles a Catalogue with details on Master dissertations and PhD Thesis that are developed at Brazilian Universities, in the areas of Microwaves and Optoelectronics.
