Utilizing Shift-or-Shrink (SOS) Method to Optimize Multi-Segment Structures of Bent Optical Waveguides

R-C Lu, K-Y Lee

Abstract

The authors utilize a heuristic shift-or-shrink (SOS) method, associated with the beam propagation method (BPM), to design optimal multi-segment bent optical waveguide. By transforming the shape of each segment, the multi-segment structure of bent waveguide can be optimized. Besides achieving the maximal transmission efficiency, it is also found that just four segments are good enough to improve the transmission performance to a satisfactory result. And the respective optimal paths of these optimal multi-segment bent waveguides become similar to one another even though the number of the segments increases.
