HYPERSENSITISATION OF OPTICAL WAVEGUIDES: TOWARDS INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION

Abstract


The intrinsic 244nm photosensitivity of boron-codoped germanosilicate optical fibres is enhanced using 355nm hypersensitisation. Hypersensitisation through standard polymer coating is also demonstrated. Under optimal conditions no OH formation is introduced, adding further support to a model based on hydrogen catalysis. Bulk hypersensitisation is demonstrated using ultra-low power UV lamps. The possibility of incorporating hypersensitisation into a commercial production environment is discussed.
