Free space optical (FSO) communication systems have shown to be a viable alternative to the fiber optics technology in several applications. However, these systems are vulnerable to atmospheric phenomena, such as attenuation and scintillation, which introduce errors, and can make the system inoperable for periods of time. This work presents a thorough feasibility study of the deployment of FSO communication systems in several regions of Brazil. A numerical model was developed for the analysis of the different loss contributions on a free space optical link. The model is based on the power budget of the system. The results show the system availability as a function of the range, and indicate that FSO systems can be deployed with good reliability in parts of the country.
